'Long Way Down' part 5
From Mass‑Murder to Cute Gorillas.
Long Way Down
Sometimes it helps to remind ourselves of mans inhumanity to man, and this episode of Long Way Down gave us the story of a village in Rwanda where people were murdered, hundreds of them, they showed us the lines of broken skulls and bloodied clothes, a very emotive piece of film, both Charley and Ewan were visibly moved and upset by the stories of horrific slaughter that had been perpurtrated there, so to make themselves feel better they went and saw some gorillas, that's what it felt like to me. I think it is important that events that happened, like Rwanda, should be pushed to the front of our conciousness to stop us from forgetting what scum is still out there in the world, most people will forget it fairly quickly though as we get on with our own lives, such is life. What is in front of us becomes important and what is distant is soon forgotten.

Charley and Ewan like to get in a few downbeat and then upbeat stories to show that Africa is still a dangerous and wonderful place, that's clever television I suppose.

The programme is becoming more like a travelog with every episode and to be honest if it didn't have the bikes in it I would have lost interest by now, it does not seem as interesting as it should be and while I thought the gorillas were cute, I still don't like having my nose rubbed in the fact that Charley and Ewan are priviledged, the magic words 'BBC' and the fact that Ewan is so well known opens many doors that would be closed to you and me, this is starting to make me feel resentful and I don't want to feel that!

I actually like Charley and Ewan, they would be high on my list of people to have dinner and a chat with and I bet going for a ride with them would be a right laugh, when they start their banter they remind me so much of Slob and myself! They have settled down now and are really hitting their stride on the bikes, although comments regarding Claudio are noticibly absent, they seem much more in tune with the bikes and the terrain and you can hear that in the way they talk to each other, Ewan particually appears to be enjoying it a lot more. Charley was not impressed by the call that Eve had arrived, he blanked his face out very quickly and I would do the same, we shall see what happens when they meet her, I suspect that when Ewan mentioned Eve turning up someone in the BBC thought it would be good to have a woman appear somewhere in the show, although why is beyond me! It's supposed to be a blokes big adventure, isn't it?

I have to say I could have sorted out the problem of the river a hell of a lot quicker than they did, Ruth was getting fed up with me pointing out the obvious way to get the trucks across, and hid my beer until I shut up about it! I won't tell you, just let you figure it out, it made me think that some of these 'problems' have been set up a bit to make it look more difficult in places. That's probably not right but…
